In the 1980s, when Essie was an assistant buyer at Bendels, she noticed a lack of variety of colors in nail polish and she realized she had to make a permanent change to the nail care industry. Essie worked with a chemist and developed 12 colors. She packed them in her suitcase and took them to Las Vegas where the women in the city, from visitors and dancers to cocktail waitresses and dealers, had a particular need for beautifully manicured hands. Luckily, the polishes were a hit and Essie Cosmetics was born.
